Day Eight: Saturday, June 16, 2007
Today went by in a flash as we did laundry, shopped, wrapped gifts, and otherwise prepared ourselves for Vicki's wedding and tomorrow morning's early flight to New York. Before we knew it, we were seated near the back of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, awaiting the entrance of the radiant bride. It was hard to believe that Vicki, little Viktushka, whom Andy and Kala affectionately regard as our little sister, was about to be married.
Andy has known Vicki since she arrived in the U.S. from Russia at the age of 15. He became like a brother to her almost immediately, and Kala shared his affection for Vicki soon after they met. It would be hard not to love Vicki. In fact, we don't know how anyone could manage it. She has such a caring and generous nature, and her energy is contagious. And what a beautiful bride!
The wedding was lovely, and it was great to get to see many of our old Williamsburg friends again. Even Kismet got dressed up for the occasion.
After the ceremony, the guests all gathered at the Two Rivers Country Club in Governor's Land to celebrate the new union. Vicki and Glenn, the new Mr. and Mrs. Rikkola, started things as only they could, bouncing in victoriously for their grand entrance. They danced a beautiful waltz, followed by the customary dances with their parents. Glenn and his mother really hammed it up on their turn, setting the bar high for the evening's festivities.
During dinner, which was divine, some very moving toasts were made by friends and family. When Glenn's father raised a glass to Vicki's parents in Russia, who were not able to be here today, there was scarcely a dry eye in the house. The party went on longer than we were able to keep up, as we have an early flight tomorrow, so we said our goodbyes and wished the happy couple a lifetime of wedded bliss. May they always be as happy as they are today!
After returning to our room and enjoying a brief rest, Andy headed out to the Corner Pocket to catch up with his old friends Linda and Craig and to enjoy the world's greatest cheese fries. Really, if you're ever in Williamsburg, don't miss the cheese fries at the Corner Pocket. And be sure to ask for extra pepper dip!
Linda and Craig are doing well, and Andy enjoyed catching up with them and discussing politics and television (always our two main topics of conversation). But the night was getting late, and, as we said, we have to get up early for our flight to New York. We'll tell you about that tomorrow!
