Summer Tour 2007

Day Two: Sunday, June 10, 2007

This morning, we bade farewell to Grandma and Grandpa Nielsen and set out, chatting all the while about our favorite parts of last night's show, for Venice Beach. We were only about an hour behind schedule today (getting better!) and then we took a wrong turn. Or maybe we missed the right turn. We're still not entirely sure, but we know we arrived at Venice Beach about an hour and a half later than we had intended, but still managed to get in a tasty lunch and a fun juggling show on the main walk. It was a nice way to spend the few extra hours we had in our schedule today, before heading down to drop Kismet off with Grandma and Grandpa Bogursky and to meet cousin Amy at UCSD for a personal tour of the campus and, even more exciting, her science lab! Unfortunately, Andy lost the disagreement his lunch had started with him, and he had to sit out this round. He stayed behind with Kismet while Victor and Kala met Amy for the first of our planned college campus tours.

The University of California at San Diego is an enormous campus, so we stuck mostly to the science wings, including the biomedical research center and the School of Engineering (there's an adorable giant stone teddy bear in the middle of the engineering school, an art installation that Kala just had to share with Victor). Amy took us to the Natural Sciences building, where she works on her Ph.D. and studies the movement of a specific protein that may help unlock the secrets of Alzheimer's Disease and lead to a cure. No pressure, Amy, really! Victor enjoyed seeing the lab and handling expensive scientific equipment. His own career interests currently lie in the sciences, and this was an incredible opportunity for him to see what the future may hold for a student who works hard and dedicates himself to his studies.

On our way back to the car, a parked SUV rudely reached out and smacked the blended mocha from Kala's hand with its mirror, sending it crashing and splashing to the ground. This would prove to be one of the highlights of the trip for Victor. He seems to have been polite enough to keep it out of his journal, but, you know us, we like to laugh at ourselves and invite you to laugh with us.

This day is not quite at an end for us, but we have to be going to the airport, so we will end our broadcasting day a bit early. We'll be flying overnight, so check back with us tomorrow to find out what happens next!
