Day Thirty: July 30, 2005: Give Us Some Space
This morning we bid a fond farewell to Walt Disney World and headed south to visit Grandma Vera and Grandpa Harry, though (of course) we had a couple of stops to make along the way. The first of these stops was at the Kennedy Space Center, near Cape Canaveral. There we toured the facility, saw the launch pads from which the Space Shuttles blast off, and viewed the enormous Vehicle Assembly Building, which is so large that the Statue of Liberty could fit through its doors without ducking.
We were able to step into a full-sized replica of a Shuttle and walk beneath an actual Saturn V rocket. The rocket, the same kind that carried our Apollo astronauts to the moon, is 363 feet tall, longer than a football field.
We strolled through the Rocket Garden, where various historic spacecraft are displayed, and we paused to remember America's heroes at the Astronauts Memorial Space Mirror.
After a good half-day spent at the space complex, we took off south again to Boynton Beach, for dinner with Andy's beloved Uncle Davey, whom Kala was very happy to get to meet after having heard so much about him. We enjoyed a delicious New York-style Chinese meal together, and then we were on our way again.
We arrived in Fort Lauderdale at the home of Grandma Vera and Grandpa Harry shortly before nine o'clock and spent some time telling them of our adventures. After a light snack (at Grandma's insistence), we decided we had better get some rest. It has been a busy month and we are not quite done yet.
